A new flexible art program is open for free this semester to area veterans at the main Arizona Western College campus. The collaboration between the college and Yuma Fine Arts, with support from a private donor, makes it possible for vets and family members to explore their creativity through ceramics in a supportive, small-group format. Professor Steven Dilley, who joined the AWC faculty in August 2013, first created the project at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California before bringing it to Yuma. The classes will meet Tuesday evenings from 6pm-to-9pm in the Ceramics Lab. The free program is considered a bridge to academic success, especially for those who are not yet ready to take traditional college classes. According to Dilley, ceramics leads to a deeper understanding of the materials, processes and opportunities a college education offers. For more information, contact Professor Dilley at 928-344-7756.
