Border Patrol agents from the Wellton Station arrested 12 smugglers in the past two days and seized over 800 pounds of marijuana worth in excess of $400,000. Agents patrolling southwest of Gila Bend apprehended four smugglers Wednesday carrying 512 pounds of marijuana. Thursday, agents arrested eight smugglers backpacking 289 pounds of marijuana near the Paloma Farm exit on I-8. All 12 individuals are Mexican nationals who had illegally entered the United States through commonly used smuggling routes crossing the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. Arizona would have more than $20 million more in state coffers if a tax loophole were closed. That is according to a new report from the United States Public Interest Research Group that focuses on a so-called "water's edge" exemption – meaning that U.S. taxes on income are exempt for money generated inside another country. Dan Smith helped write the report. He explains that it is as simple as a corporation setting up a post office box in a low-tax country, such as the Cayman Islands, and claiming the exemption.

A transient is hospitalized in critical condition after being run over by a car while he was in the middle of a Phoenix street. They say the man was about 21-years-old, but his name was not immediately released. Police say it is unclear why the transient was in the street. The unidentified driver was on his way to get coffee and was unsure what he hit. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has signed legislation giving the state's child welfare agency enough cash to hire 192 new workers right away. The Senate and House of Representatives voted last week to approve the extra $6.8 million in spending. Brewer pulled Child Protective Services from its parent agency on January 13th and made it a stand-alone department reporting to her. The action was triggered by revelations that more than 65-hundred child-abuse and neglect reports had intentionally not been investigated. Gasoline prices around Arizona are virtually the same at the pump this week. Officials with AAA Arizona said Thursday that the average statewide price for unleaded regular gasoline is $3.24 a gallon. That is down by less than a penny from last week. This week's national average is at $3.27 per gallon, also less than a penny lower than last week. Tucson has Arizona's lowest average gasoline price at $3.15 a gallon and Flagstaff has the highest at $3.35.
Montana has the lowest average gas prices in the continental United States at $3.02 a gallon with Connecticut having the highest at $3.63 a gallon.

The Yuma Police Department Graffiti Task Force is currently investigating several criminal damage cases and is requesting the assistance of the public in identifying a group of graffiti taggers using the graffiti monikers, “T-H-C”, “HYPE”, “RISK”, “STEEX” and “SMEAR.” This group has been very active over the past month and is responsible for graffiti damage to numerous residences, a local high school, a large amount of city property and at least one local house of worship.

Indio Border Patrol Agents Arrest Suspected Narcotics Smuggler; Seize Four Pounds Of Methamphetamine
El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station arrested a suspected narcotics smuggler and seized more than four-pounds of methamphetamine concealed within the vehicle. Border Patrol agents encountered a 48-year-old male driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado as he approached the Highway-111 checkpoint located near Niland, California. A Border Patrol Canine Detection team alerted to the vehicle and the driver was referred to secondary for further inspection.

United States Border Patrol agents from the Wellton Station apprehended eight men, all illegal immigrants, and seized a loaded handgun at the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge Tuesday. Agents patrolling in the wildlife refuge encountered and apprehended the group north of Camino Del Diablo. Near one of the men, agents found a loaded Titan Tiger .38-caliber revolver and 13 loose rounds of .38-caliber ammunition. Based on past experience and evidence found at the scene, agents determined the men were scouts for narcotics smuggling.
