Border Patrol Agents At Indio Station Apprehend Driver For Suspected Human Smuggling

Border-Patrol-PatchEl Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station apprehended a suspected human smuggler Tuesday after agents found a man hidden in the trunk of his vehicle at the Highway 86 checkpoint. 

A 19-year-old male driver approached the Border Patrol checkpoint located between Westmorland and Salton City, when a canine detection team alerted police to a 2012 Hyundai Sonata as it approached the primary inspection lane.  Agents discovered a man hiding in the trunk. 

The 38-year-old Mexican national man was showing symptoms of heat related injuries.  Agents immediately contacted Emergency Medical Technicians, who transported the man to Pioneer’s Memorial Hospital, where he was later released and transported back to the checkpoint for processing. 

The male driver, a United States citizen, was taken into custody and is pending prosecution.
