El Centro Border Patrol Agents Arrest Suspected Narcotics Smuggler

On Tuesday, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station arrested a suspected narcotics smuggler with nearly nine-pounds of methamphetamine concealed in a false compartment within an SUV. Border Patrol agents encountered a 21-year-old woman driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero as she approached the Highway 86 checkpoint. A Border Patrol Canine Detection team alerted to the SUV and the woman was referred for further inspection. During the inspection, agents discovered nine individually wrapped packages of methamphetamine hidden inside a false compartment located underneath the floorboard behind the back seat. The methamphetamine had a combined weight of eight-point-eight-pounds with an estimated street value of over $57,000. The suspected smuggler, a United States citizen, was taken into custody. The woman, vehicle, and anarcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
