The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is continuing their investigation of the shooting of 42-year-old Rafael Salas Adame last week. Police say the weapon in Adame’s possession was a stolen firearm. Deputies spotted Adame in a field along Avenue Seven-E and approached him on foot.
While approaching Adame, Deputies witnessed him pulling a handgun from his waist or pocket area and pointing the weapon at himself. Adame was given multiple commands to drop the gun and failed to comply. Yuma County Sheriff Leon Wilmot says the officers did the right thing.
A forensic autopsy was performed by the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday and results are pending. The case remains under investigation and the Deputies remain on paid Administrative leave until the conclusion of the investigation.
