Lack Of Awareness About Financial Assistance Is Biggest Obstacle For Affordable Care Act Consumers

With a little more than two months to go in the open-enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act, community organizers say the biggest obstacle for consumers is not the website but a lack of awareness about financial assistance. Erin Knott of Enroll America says many Arizonans her group has worked with are well aware that "Care" is available under the ACA, but the "Affordable" part takes some convincing.
In a recent Enroll America survey, eight out of ten uninsured respondents did not believe they could afford health insurance. It is estimated that 60-percent of those currently uninsured will qualify for financial assistance to purchase insurance under the Affordable Care Act. By the end of December 2013, 28,000 Arizonans had signed up for insurance through the federal marketplace. An additional 100,000 have qualified for expanded Medicaid coverage under the ACA.
